Orchard Software, a leader in laboratory information systems (LIS), faced an increasing volume of client requests for data analytics and reporting services. Often highly specific and detailed, the ad-hoc requests required slicing Orchard’s LIS data in unique ways, pulling staff away from the company’s core product development goals and delaying the next version of its LIS products.

The Challenge
Orchard recognized that responding to these customized requests for data insights was unsustainable and required a solution that would allow clients access to self-service data analytics. The company’s primary goal was to design a scalable, cloud-based platform where clients could easily retrieve, slice and analyze their data with stringent access controls to help ensure security and data integrity.
The Solution
Orchard engaged Wipfli to develop a streamlined, cloud-based data analytics solution using Microsoft Power BI and Azure Synapse. Key elements included:
- Automated data processes: With Power BI and Azure Synapse, clients can now retrieve, filter and analyze data without manual support from Orchard’s team.
- Controlled access privileges: Wipfli integrated a controlled-access system to provide customizable access levels, protecting sensitive data and making it accessible only to authorized users.
- Single cloud-based platform: The solution is a single-architecture platform, allowing Orchard to centralize client access to data analytics and create a consistent, efficient experience for clients.
